Social media management can be profitable when a manager prices a focused organic service to cover delivery time, software, taxes, overhead, and a sustainable margin. Vague scope, unlimited revisions, slow approvals, and unpaid communication can consume a monthly retainer quickly.
Separate revenue from profit
A client payment is revenue; profit is what remains after direct costs, operating expenses, and the complete time required to serve the account. Track discovery, planning, writing, editing, revisions, scheduling, reporting, meetings, messages, sales, and administration.
Price a documented service boundary
Define platforms, post volume, source materials, approvals, reporting, response windows, and turnaround times. Build a written process for scope changes and do not price around guaranteed followers, leads, sales, reach, or engagement.
Manage capacity deliberately
Estimate full monthly hours for each account, reserve time for administration and surprises, and review actual time each month. When work repeatedly exceeds scope, improve the workflow, narrow deliverables, raise the price, or decline the work.
