What Does a Social Media Manager Do?

A social media manager plans, creates or coordinates approved content, publishes it, monitors agreed channels during agreed hours, and reports on the work. An organic service is a communication and workflow responsibility, not a guarantee of followers, sales, or viral reach.

Core responsibilities

The work includes discovery and planning, content production, approval and publishing, documented community triage, and reporting on available platform metrics. The manager needs clear client facts, usable assets, an approval contact, and an escalation plan for sensitive messages.

A practical monthly workflow

Confirm platforms, goals, access, and voice; create a content outline from approved topics; prepare drafts for review; schedule only approved posts; monitor at the agreed frequency; then review workload and results before agreeing on the next month’s scope.

What to keep outside a beginner scope

Organic publishing does not control platform algorithms, a client’s sales process, or audience response. Paid advertising management, crisis communications, regulated-claims review, and 24/7 moderation should be separately staffed, priced, authorized, and documented.
